Enjoyable music education
for all ages
I'm Tarn and I teach piano
With a teaching degree and a wealth of experience I thrive on tailoring lessons to each pupils’ needs.
Whether at my dedicated music room or in school, I’ll develop a personalised teaching plan, enabling you to develop your skills quicker.
The Melia Music difference
- With my skills as a qualified teacher and the nature of one to one lessons, I am able to really work to my pupils' strengths, meaning that they gain a sense of achievement through the new skills they acquire whilst learning written notation and piano technique.
- Once a pupil has gained enough confidence, we can look at performance opportunities for them if they wish, such as a pupil concert, or a graded exam. This helps to build their confidence further and give them opportunities to showcase their skills and work on risk taking, which is often needed for adult life, such as job interviews.
- Music is known to relax us. Learning a musical instrument immerses my pupils in a new world, which can help tackle stress and anxiety. With the correct choice of repertoire; something that I pride myself on picking to the individual’s strengths and interests, emotions can be expressed in ways that may otherwise not be accessible to the individual.
- From the first lesson onwards, we will usually use each hand individually, but also both in the same piece of music, increasing coordination. We will also look at patterns; both in the physical keys and also in the length of notes. There has been lots of research into how maths and music affect each other in a positive way.
- My lessons will also involve building on an individual’s creativity; I will get my pupils to imagine certain things, such as in the piece ‘Cops and Robbers’, footsteps and shining torches in the face of the potential criminal! It not only makes the lessons fun, but means the pupils can use the titles of the pieces and their knowledge of the world to create an enriched piece of music.

In School Tuition
Having worked in schools for over 15 years I have found that teaching young pupils during their school day not only provides better focus, but also doesn’t interfere with the family’s busy schedule.
I work at a number of schools around Oxfordshire as an external provider of piano tuition and would love to help your school expand their music offering.

What You Get
In schools, teaching time is 25 mins. I allow 5 minutes on top of this to collect and drop off each individual pupil from their classroom, so that high levels of safeguarding are practised.
As a private pupil, you would be responsible for making your own way to my designated Music Room in my home and for being prompt for your lesson, which would be 30 minutes long.
The majority of your lesson will be made up of practical work (actual fingers-on-the-keys stuff), topped up with a little bit of theory.
You will need a piano or keyboard at home and you’ll need to be committed enough to practise regularly. Parents of younger ones will need to help support this.
